Google’s Roboto Flex is a fully customizable font or variable font as you might know it, that you can use to replace even all your fonts (if you don’t use too many).

The future is here, Google is doing it as we write this article.

They just released Roboto Flex, a completely customizable Roboto font.

If you don’t know too much about Roboto, here is some cool information.

  • Roboto is the most used Google font.
  • It is the default font on Android devices which are over 2.5 billion users.

So of course, Google picked Roboto to supercharge it with this Flex varianta that lets you do all the customizations you want, transforming Roboto in the font you need for all your projects.

Everything you need to know about Roboto Flex

Roboto as you know today is a bit different from the Roboto that was launched back in 2011.

Since then, Google constantly tweaked and improved Roboto, and they also launched different variants – sans Roboto, Roboto Serif, Roboto condensed, Roboto slab, and others.

Now Roboto gets a huge upgrade, the biggest upgrade ever made by Google.

And this is not just an upgrade in my opinion, it is a revolution in the font industry.

Roboto Flex now can be fully customized from all points of its design:

– Weight

– Width

– Optical sizes

As Google says: “Adapt the style to specific text sizes. At smaller sizes, letters typically become optimized for more legibility. At larger sizes, optimized for headlines, with more extreme weights and widths. In CSS this axis is activated automatically when it is available.”

– Fine tuning

The biggest difference between Roboto Flex and other variable fonts is the fact that with Roboto Flex you can huge flexibility.

The font comes with a wide range of weights and widths and you can use in different optical sizes.

This is important, as you can customize Roboto Flex for every size, every device, every application, every style, and every mood.

“The extremely light and narrow, or bold and wide styles that are now available in Flex’s largest optical sizes are so extreme, they are astonishing to me,” said Dave Crossland, Lead UX Programs and Operations Manager for Google Fonts. “And you don’t have to worry about them being illegible at small sizes, because the 1,000 weight at 144pt is not as extreme at 10pt. Everything in between is smoothly balanced too, for a very even typographic color, and this really simplifies producing high-quality typography.”

Google’s Roboto Flex Is A Fully Customizable Font – here is how to use it

As you see in this picture, there are lots of things you can customize.

With Roboto Flex, you can change pretty much everything, over 10 design options:

– Optical size

– Weight

– Width

– Slant

– Ascender height

– Counter width

– Descender height

– Figure height

– Grade

– Lowercase height

– Thin stroke

– Uppercase height

Now that you know everything you can change, you understand perfectly the power of Roboto Flex.

And it is 100% free to use.

It is like having an all-in-one free to use font, for all your projects.

If you haven’t played already with Roboto Flex, you should do it know here.

Conclusions

Variable fonts represent the future, and soon we will see them everywhere.

Google made a huge forward step with Roboto Flex and I bet it will hit the font industry hard with this awesome product.

Don’t forget that Roboto font is already super popular all over the world, and now people have the possibility to easily customize the font as they need, in just a few seconds, with a few clicks.

Nowadays there are no limits when it comes to banner design. You can create one within minutes and there is an abundance of banner fonts at your disposal. What makes the difference though, is knowing which font you should be using. Most times, all the details should be connected and related to the audience as well and not rely just on your taste and intuition. But by far the most important aspect is legibility. All messages should be written in clarity.

So how can you choose the best fonts for your banners?

Just like we mentioned in one of our article How do famous brands choose their fonts, there are fonts that have the power to generate some emotions in the mind of the viewer. So our advice is to know at least the basic notions before proceeding to creating a banner design.

Helvetica

Let’s start with an all time classic!

Helvetica is probably one the most widely used fonts by graphic designers. Why? Because of its simple and unique shape, the message can be very easy to see and read.

Futura ND Alt Cond Light font

Just as we mentioned above, legibility is super important when it comes to banner and advertising in general. If you have many things to say but don’t have much available space, then the best choice for you is Futura. You will get enough freedom to say more than you would say with other fonts.

Roboto Light

Initially, Roboto was designed by Google itself. Its design transmits simplicity and elegance. It is one of the most used fonts in all industries that require text. This makes it one of the best banner fonts, so choose it if you want to portray elegance and simplicity.

Walkway Black

This font is innovative, easy to read and has a modern and trendy look. Creative industries are already using Walkway for their marketing materials. If you what you look for is novelty and freshness, then use this font for your banners.

Rubika font

This font can make quite an impression, mostly due to the round shapes of the letters and heaviness added to them. Knowing that your message may come across as bold and create a longer lasting effect on the audience, it makes it the perfect choice for your banners.

If you want to try other fonts and bring something new to your banner designs, then check Whatfontis. There are so many fonts to choose from, that all you need is inspiration, passion and time!
